From Dependency to Ownership: How EDI Support LLC Helped PortCity Take Control of EDI and System Integration with Boomi

Chris Somerville
SVP Technology Strategy, PortCity
Our collaboration with EDI Support was a key factor in our project’s success. They translated our requirements into a scalable Boomi architecture and provided highly responsive resources that eliminated the time-zone delays we’ve faced in the past. Their guidance and intuitive process design empowered our team to troubleshoot issues effectively, despite having limited knowledge of the Boomi platform
About PortCity
PortCity is a full-service third-party logistics (3PL) provider headquartered in Savannah, Georgia. With proximity to the Port of Savannah, they offer end-to-end logistics solutions across warehousing, transportation, drayage, and freight management.
Serving a diverse range of industries, PortCity is known for its speed, scalability, and commitment to technology-driven operations. The business operates through multiple divisions including Fleet and freight management and relies on modern TMS and WMS platforms to keep goods moving and customers informed.
As a fast-growing logistics partner, PortCity is focused on streamlining its technology stack, improving operational efficiency, and delivering real-time visibility across the supply chain. Their existing EDI platform couldn’t keep up with the pace or flexibility their business demanded.
Challenges Faced
PortCity was managing a complex and evolving technology environment across multiple divisions. They had invested in various transportation and warehouse management platforms over the years, each serving a specific need at a specific time. But integrating these systems with the existing EDI software had grown increasingly complex and time-consuming.
With a desire to consolidate applications, PortCity knew they needed a more scalable, cost-effective integration strategy that they could fully own and control. They brought in a third party integration provider to help build custom APIs to support integration. They also started evaluating alternatives to their existing EDI provider. Boomi offered the control, flexibility, and low-code environment PortCity needed to future-proof their operations.
Their goals were clear:
- Centralize data exchange across all platforms
- Improve the speed and ease of trading partner onboarding
- Reduce long-term integration costs
- Build an internal architecture they could manage without external dependencies
They needed the right technical partner to help implement customer EDI integrations with Boomi quickly, cleanly, and in a way that would evolve with their business. That’s where EDI Support LLC came in.
EDI Support LLC’s Solution
EDI Support LLC created a clear plan on how all the technical work will be handled to achieve the above goals in Boomi. While PortCity continued managing relationships and requirements with their trading partners, our team handled the Boomi configuration, deployment, and support behind the scenes.
From the start, the goal was to give our client full control over their integration framework. That began with replacing their existing EDI and implementing clean, efficient Boomi processes for transforming and exchanging EDI data.
As their internal systems evolved, we continued supporting new workflows, onboarding requests and delivering timely technical solutions without requiring PortCity to expand their internal development team.
All implementation and support work is tracked through project codes, giving their team transparency and flexibility as their priorities shift.
Today, PortCity owns a Boomi-powered integration infrastructure that is reliable, future-ready, and fully aligned with their business goals.

Lessons Learned
PortCitys’ journey from vendor lock-in to ownership-driven integration came with valuable insights for us as an experienced EDI consulting company and any growing logistics company navigating complex tech ecosystems.

1.
Flexibility Is the New Requirement
With evolving internal systems and varying partner requirements, rigid solutions created more friction than value. A platform like Boomi (with low-code flexibility and support for both JSON and EDI) allowed PortCity to move faster and adapt to change. -
2.
You Don’t Need a Massive Team to Modernize
PortCity didn’t hire a large internal IT team. Instead, they partnered with EDI Support LLC to handle technical execution while keeping business strategy in-house. That division of responsibility led to fast turnaround times, clean execution, and cost-effective scalability. -
3.
Centralization Reduces Chaos
By integrating multiple platforms including TMS and WMS into a single Boomi-driven ecosystem, PortCity simplified processes, reduced manual work, and eliminated the possibility of errors and redundancy. -
4.
Don’t Be Afraid to Rethink the Stack
Replacing long-standing tools may feel risky but in PortCity’s case, it was exactly what was needed to move forward. Modern logistics requires modern tools and the courage to make the switch.
